Rhondda Colliery Openings

Below are listed some of the Colliery Openings within the Rhondda Valleys.  The list is not, as yet, complete and is still being researched.  If anyone has further details please contact me.

ABERGORCHY COLLIERY

Opened in 1865 by G. Insole & Sons at Treorchy and it produced steam coal.

ABERGORCHY LEVEL

Opened in 1859 by Huxham, Hopkin and Morgan at Treorchy. It was a bituminous working.

ADARE COLLIERY

Opened in 1868 by Daniel Thomas at Penygraig. It produced bituminous coal.

ANTHONY COLLIERY

Opened in 1910 by the Naval Colliery Company at Tonypandy and produced steam coal

BERTIE COLLIERY

Opened in 1881 by William Thomas Lewis at Hafod and produced steam coal. (See Also Trefor and Hafod Collieries.) (Now part of the Rhondda Heritage Museum)

BLAENRHONDDA  COLLIERY

Opened in 1869 by The Cardiff & Merthyr Steam Coal at Blaenrhondda and it produced steam coal.

BODRINGALLT LEVEL

Opened in 1856 in Ystrad Rhondda by D. Jones and D. James. It was a working which produced bituminous coal.

BRITHWEYNEDD LEVEL

Opened in 1862 by Daniel Thomas at Trealaw and produced bituminous coal.

BUTE COLLIERY unk by W.S. Clarke at Cwmsaebren on the 16th of October 1851 for the Marquis of Bute. This was one of the two collieries which pioneered the first attempts to work the famous Rhondda "Steam" coal seams. Notice the early "timber" headgear.The Upper four feet was reach at a depth of 125 yards. A second shaft was sunk between 1853 and 1855 to serve as an upcast. This was the first steam coal colliery in the Rhondda and on the 21st of December 1855 from this colliery the first consignment of Rhondda steam coal was sent to Cardiff docks.
From the Inspector of Mines list 1896, work was suspended at this colliery and there were only seven men employed.
Later it became part of the Ocean & United National Collieries Ltd.

BWLLFA LEVEL

Opened in 1862 by Richardson & Carr at Ton Pentre. It was a bituminous working.

CAMBRIAN COLLIERY Originally known as the Clydach Vale Collieries, No.1 was sunk in 1872 and No. 2 in 1874, both by S. Thomas & J. Riches & Co. Ltd. They were sold to the Cambrian Colliery Co. Ltd., in 1885, who immediately sunk a third shaft. A fourth shaft was sunk in 1891. 

CHURCH LEVEL

Opened in 1857 by Edward Curtis at Pentre and it produced bituminous coal.

CLYDACH VALE COLLIERY No. 1

Opened in 1872 by The S. Thomas & J. Riches Company at Clydach Vale. It produced steam coal.

CLYDACH VALE COLLIERY No. 2

Opened in 1874 by Thomas, Riches & Company at Clydach Vale. It produced steam coal.

CLYDACH VALE COLLIERY

Opened in 1891 by The Cambrian Colliery Company at Clydach Vale and produced steam coal.

COEDCAE COLLIERY

Opened in 1850 by Edward Mills at Hafod.

CYMMER (OLD) COLLIERY

Opened in 1847 by George Insole at Porth.

DARE COLLIERY

Opened in 1870 by D. Davies & Company Limited at Cwmparc. It produced steam coal

DINAS COLLIERY

Opened in 1869 by Daniel Thomas at Dinas and it produced bituminous coal.

DINAS COLLIERY

Opened in 1881 by the Dinas Steam Coal Company at Dinas. It produced steam coal.

DINAS LEVELS

Opened in 1809 by Walter Coffin at Dinas.

DINAS LOWER COLLIERY

Opened c.1812 by Walter Coffin at Dinas

DINAS MIDDLE COLLIERY

Opened in 1832 by Walter Coffin at Dinas.

DUNRAVEN LEVELS

Opened in 1858 by Thomas Joseph in Blaen-y-Cwm. It produced bituminous coal.

EASTERN COLLIERY D. Davies & Co. Ltd. sunk this steam coal colliery in 1877, later to become the Ocean Steam Coal Co. Ltd. and in 1896 employed 32 men. However by 1918 it employed 775 men.

ELY COLLIERY

Opened in 1880 by the New Naval Colliery Company at Penygraig. It produced steam coal.

FERNDALE COLLIERY No. 1

Opened in 1857 by David Davis At Ferndale It was a steam coal colliery

FERNDALE COLLIERY No. 2

Opened in 1870 by David Davis & Sons at Ferndale. It was a steam coal colliery.

FERNDALE COLLIERY No. 4

Opened in 1874 by David Davis & Son at Ferndale. It was a steam coal colliery.

FERNDALE COLLIERY No. 9

Opened in 1907 by David Davies & Sons Ltd at Tylorstown. It was a steam coal colliery.

FERNHILL COLLIERY

Opened in 1872 by Ebenezer Lewis at Blaenrhondda. It produced steam coal.

GELLI COLLIERY

Opened in 1877 by R. Thomas at Gelli

GLAMORGAN COLLIERY Opened in 1861 by Archibald Hood

Opened in 1860 by C. James at Treorchy. It was bituminous working.

GLYNFACH COLLIERY

Opened in 1851 by Isaac Williams at Porth.

GLYNMOCH COLLIERY

Opened in 1872 at Treorchy. It produced bituminous coal.

GRAIG COLLIERY

Opened in 1858 by Thomas Jones at Blaen-y-Cwm. It was a bituminous coal colliery.

JONES COLLIERY Sunk in 1849 and was bought in 1873 by Thomas Jones of Maindy House. Closed in 1909

LADY LEWIS

Opened in 1904 by the Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Ltd. at Ynyshir. It was a steam coal colliery.

LADY MARGARET COLLIERY

Opened in 1877 by The Marquis of Bute at Treherbert. It produced steam coal.

LLWYNCELYN COLLIERY

Opened in 1851 by D.W. James Nr. Porth.

LLWYNYPIA COLLIERY

Opened in 1863 by the Glamorgan Coal Company at Llwynypia and produced bituminous coal.

LLWYNYPIA LEVEL

Opened in 1859 by Isaac Smith at Llwynypia. It was bituminous working.

LLWYNYPIA No. 4

Opened in 1872 by the Glamorgan Coal Company at Llwynypia and it produced steam coal.

MAERDY No. 2 COLLIERY

Opened in 1876 by Mordecai Jones and Wheatley Cobb at Maerdy. It was a steam coal colliery.

MAERDY No. 3

Opened in 1893 by Locket & Co. at Maerdy. It was a steam coal colliery.

MAERDY No. 4

Opened in 1914 by Locket's Merthyr at Maerdy. It was a steam coal colliery

NANTGWYN COLLIERY

Opened in 1892 by the Naval Colliery Company at Penygraig and produced steam coal.

NATIONAL No. 1 COLLIERY

Opened in 1881 by Ebenezer Lewis, Henry Lewis and Matthew Cope at Wattstown. It was a steam coal colliery.

NATIONAL NO. 2 COLLIERY

Opened in 1881 by Ebenezer Lewis, Henry Lewis and Matthew Cope at Wattstown. It was a steam coal colliery.

NAVAL COLLIERY Sunk in 1875 by Moses Rowlands and reached the main coal seams in 1879

NEW CYMMER COLLIERY

Opened in 1855 by J. H. Insole at Porth.

NEWBRIDGE COLLIERY

Opened in 1845 by John Calvert at Gelliwion, Nr. Pontypridd.

PENDYRUS COLLIERY

Opened in 1873 by Alfred Taylor at Tylorstown. It was a steam coal colliery.

PENTRE COLLIERY

Opened in 1864 by Curteis, Greenhill & Ware at Pentre. It produced steam coal.

PENTRE LEVEL

Opened in 1857 by Edward Curteis at Pentre. It produced bituminous coal.

PENYGRAIG COLLIERY

Opened in 1864 by the Penygraig Coal Company at Penygraig. I produced bituminous coal.

PENYGRAIG DRIFT

Opened in 1857 by Thomas Ellis at Penygraig. It was a bituminous coal colliery.

PENYGRAIG LEVEL

Opened in 1858 by M. Rowlands at Penygraig. It was a bituminous coal colliery.

Opened c.1847 by William Perch at Blaenclydach.

PONTYGWAITH COLLIERY

Opened in 1858 by Thomas Wayne at Pontygwaith. It was a steam coal colliery

PORTH COLLIERY

Opened in 1845 by D.W. James at Porth.

SOUTH CYMMER LEVEL

Opened in 1841 by Richard Lewis at Porth

TREALAW COLLIERY

Opened in 1872 at Trealaw and produced bituminous coal.

TREFOR COLLIERY

Opened in 1865 by Thos. Joseph at Blaen-y-Cwm and it produced steam coal.

TYLACOCH COLLIERY

Opened in 1855 by I. Carr, Merson & Co at Treorchy. It was a steam coal colliery.

TYNEWYDD COLLIERY

Opened in 1852 by Cope, Lewis and Thomas at Porth. 

TYNEWYDD COLLIERY

Opened in 1865 by Ebenezer Jonas Nr. Treherbert and it produced steam coal.

TYNTYLA LEVEL

Opened in 1856 by Robert Parsons at Ystrad. it was a bituminous coal colliery.

TYNYBEDW COLLIERY

Opened in 1876 by E. Thomas & G. Griffiths at Pentre and produced steam coal.

UPPER CYMMER COLLIERY

Opened in 1851 by J.H. Insole Nr. Porth.

YNYSFEIO COLLIERY

Opened in 1859 by the Troedyrhiw Coal Company at Treherbert and was a steam coal colliery.

YNYSHIR COLLIERY

Opened in 1845 by Shepherd & Evans at Ynyshir.

YNYSHIR STEAM COLLIERY (STANDARD 1)

Opened in 1876 by James Thomas at Ynyshir. It was a steam coal colliery.

YNYSHIR STEAM COLLIERY (STANDARD 2)

Opened in 1876 by James Thomas at Ynyshir. It was a steam coal colliery.

Opened in 1869 by Morgan Jones at Treorchy and produced bituminous coal.
