Sunk by W.S. Clarke at
Cwmsaebren on the 16th of
October 1851 for the Marquis of
Bute. This was one of the two
collieries which pioneered the
first attempts to work the
famous Rhondda "Steam" coal
seams. Notice the early "timber"
headgear.
The Upper four feet
was reach at a depth of 125
yards. A second shaft was sunk
between 1853 and 1855 to serve
as an upcast. This was the first
steam coal colliery in the
Rhondda and on the 21st of
December 1855 from this colliery
the first consignment of Rhondda
steam coal was sent to Cardiff
docks.
From the Inspector of Mines list
1896, work was suspended at this
colliery and there were only
seven men employed.
Later it became part of the
Ocean & United National
Collieries Ltd.
It closed in 1926
