This statue, by Robert Thomas
Studios, Llantwit Major, was
commissioned by the Rhondda
Civic Society. It is on the
site of the 'Scotch'
Colliery, close the the
Power House - the centre of
the Tonypandy Riots of
1910-11, and stands some 8
Feet (2.43 metres) high and
was unveiled by the Rt. Hon
George Thomas, Viscount
Tonypandy, on 14th
October 1993.
A time capsule was buried in
the plinth of the statue.
It depicts a strong miner
together with his wife, a
typical 'Mam', who is nursing
their child 'Welsh Fashion'.
